once again ethan, you've touched on an issue which is as both important to the health of our society as it is frightening in its implications. in short, the president of the united states -- relying, no doubt, the expertise in scientific controversies which he gained during his tenure at yale -- has publicly come out and endorsed a completely illegitimate, theology-based "viewpoint" completely at odds with all the valid research which has been done in the spheres of biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, etc. over the course of the last 145-150 years or so (since darwin published his celebrated "on the origins of species.")what is the rationale for the attack on science and the simultaneous (and completely interrelated) embrace of a patently absurd perspective entirely founded on a literalust interpretation of the bible??? in short, bush heads a regime which has as its primary, overriding goal the further enrichment of an already ultra-affluent ruling financial elite. from endless wars abroad to tax cuts for the richest 1% of the population within america, to the process whereby the masses' fundamental democratic rights are sacrificed towards the end of constructing a police-state type autocratic regime, this governmmental system which bush is the nominal head of is based on enriching the multi-millionaires and billionaires by any means necessary. obviously, destroying social security, making it easier for credit card companies to collect debts from middle-income people, keeping the minimum wage remain the same while prices steadily climb upwards, etc. is not something which is helping the working-class majority in this country; quite the contrary. thus, bush needs to create some kind of "popular base" for his ultra-reactionary political agenda. thats where appeals to religious backwardness come in. opposition to abortion, government (that is, our taxes) funding conservative christian groupings or organizations (the so-called faith-based initiative,) introducing prayers to god in public school, supporting ignorant and vicious so-called "right-to-life" elements vis-a-vis the Terri Schiavo matter -- all of this is part of a plan to create a mass base of support for him and the Republican Party as they attempt to transform the country irreversibly into a right-wing, police-state basically fascist nation. bush's plans and policy agenda are not fundamentally different from the ones embraced by elements like chilean dictator pinochet, spanish dictator franco, and, sad to say, those of mussolini and hitler. anways, i wanted to say that the good people at wsws.org (the world socialist web site) had an article on this whole "intelligent design" matter some time ago .... i post it below for your edification: World Socialist Web Site www.wsws.org |
